- What is and how does Net Billing with PV work?
Net-Billing gives the owners of photovoltaic systems the opportunity for synchronized offsetting of the energy produced by the solar panels they have installed on their roofs or terraces. Any excess electricity can be sold to the grid.
In other words: you can consume the energy from the photovoltaic panels on the spot as it is produced and any energy left over can be sold.
This is the main difference compared to the net metering program that expired on 15 May along with the subsidy program for roof-top photovoltaics.
In the case of net metering, any excess energy was stored in the grid and consumers could get it back when their PVs were not producing (e.g. at night) or when PV production was less than consumption (e.g. in winter, cloudy days, etc.). All the energy produced by the solar panels, regardless of when it was consumed, was energetically balanced with the energy they had consumed.
The price at which the providers will buy the excess electricity in net-billing will be the wholesale price at the time the excess electricity is delivered to the public grid. In practice, sales and purchase electricity bills will be netted.
The net-billing electricity bill will result from the netting (in €) of the energy bought from the grid minus the energy sold to the grid.
The energy that we ” drew ” from the photovoltaic and consumed on site or stored in a battery for future use will not be charged!
- Net-billing using a battery
So far, in net-billing the sale price of excess (outgoing to the grid) energy is less than the purchase price of incoming energy. Thus, the addition of a battery will be highly important. Especially when most of our consumptions are during times when the PV has low production (e.g. early morning or late afternoon) or when it has no production at all (e.g. in the evening).
With the battery it is possible to store a sufficient percentage of the surplus energy and then consume it on a priority basis when the photovoltaic has no more production (e.g. at night) – just like in net metering!
